THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FLUORESCENCE AND PHASE CONTRAST BACTERIOSCOPIC DIAGNOSIS OF TUBEIS,
JOINT PUBLICATIONS RESEARCH SERVICE WASHINGTON D C
Staining of the mycobacteria of tuberculosis with auramine 00 containing rhodamine S is quite specific. Of the many bacteria studied only the acid-fast saprophytes took this stain, but their fluorescence was appreciably different in brightness and color from that of tubercle bacteria. By means of fluorescence bacterio scopy it was possible to demonstrate tuberculosis bacteria in 52-56 percent more cases than with ordinary light bacterioscopy Ziehl-Neelsen method thereby, the examination was completed three-four times more quickly. Phase-contrast bacterioscopic diagnosis of tuberculosis is spe cific, makes it possible to demonstrate positive results in an additional 26-32 percent of cases and cuts the time by two-three times. The flotation method considerably improves the re sults of any type of microscopy. Author
