Abstract:

The gap sensitivities for low velocity detonation LVD in 1,2-DP and 2,2-DP were determined. For 1,2-DP this was between 30.5 cm and 126 cm of Plexiglas it was greater than 187 cm for 2,2-DP. The LVD propagation velocity for both compounds was found to decrease to a constant value of about 2.0 mmmicrosec at large gaps 10 cm and greater. The failure diameter of 2,3-DB was determined experimentally to be in the neighborhood of 10 mm. Because of difficulties in establishing the validity of failure diameter results in IBA and 2,3-DB, a literature search on liquid explosives was completed, covering the period from 1960 to the present. Additional diagnostic experiments were undertaken to determine the role of dark waves in the failure mechanism of liquid explosives. It is clear that they are the mechanisms of failure in many cases however, it is not yet certain that they are always the mechanism.
