Title:
INVESTIGATION OF A HIGH-ENERGY MONOPROPELLANT.
Corporate Author:
ROCKET RESEARCH CORP SEATTLE WASH
Report Date:
1966-08-01
Abstract:
This report summarizes work performed on a program designed to study the physiochemical, ignition, and combustion characteristics of a new family of high energy, beryllium-containing monopropellants possessing theoretical specific impulses of greater than 300 lbf-seclbm at 1,000 psia exhausted to 14.7 psia. These investigations resulted in development of a safe and practical monopropellant candidate, designated MONEX DW 25G.4-M1, possessing a theoretical specific impulse of 302.4 lbf-seclbm and a measured density of 0.0480 lbsin3. Sustained combustion of MONEX DW formulations has been demonstrated in end-burning type motors using both pyrotechnic and hypergolic slug ignition techniques. Test firings at the nominal 100 lb thrust level indicate that although good conversion of beryllium oxide is obtained at chamber pressures of greater than 1,000 psia, poor expulsion of solid combustion products is obtained with motors of this type.
