Abstract:

Disproportionation of CBH under vacuum gave purities up to 88 wt. BeH2 with conversions up to 91 based on the amount of ether evolved on disproportionation. Residual chloride and ether continued to contaminate the final product. Complete removal of these impurities remains to be accomplished. The disproportionation in dimethyl sulfide gave beryllium hydride in purities up to 90 wt. BeH2 with about 1.0 wt. Cl. However, the conversion was only 16 based on initial CBH. Convenient methods for the purification of beryllium chloride were developed which permit utilization of low cost BeCl2 for the preparation of CBH. These involve a sublimation of BeCl2OEt2 at 74-76 C leaving the impurities as involatile residue, and b removal of beryllium-oxide species by precipitation in diethyl ether solvent. Author
