Abstract:
Studies concerned with the optimization and scaleup of the synthesis of the high-energy binder, poly1,2,-bisdifluoramine -2,3-epoxypropaneP-BEP were carnied out, and 20 lbs of the material have been supplied to Air Force and ARPA Contractors for evluation. This prepolymer of ca 58 NF2 content is prepared in three stps 1 polymerization of ipichlorohydrin, 2 alkaline dehydrochlorination of the polyepichlorhydrin, and 3 difluoramination of the resulting unsaturated polymer with N2F4. The preparation of polyepichlorohydrin with a narrow molecular weight distribution has been scaled up to the 3000 g level. The dehydrochlorination of polyepichlorohydrin was studied in an effort to improve both the functinality and the unsaturation of the intermediate polymer. Parallel studies of the dehydrochlorintion of model compounds were performed i order to elucidate the effects of reaction variables on the products obtained. Improved techniques of handling the reaction mixtures and products on a larger scale were made. The reaction variables and the recovery and purification procedures for the difluoramination step were also studied. Curing studies with P-BEP samples of various molecular weights and functionalities have been made, and the physival and mechanical properties of the cured binder have been evaluated in both filled and unfilled systems.
