Title:
FLIGHT NO. 49(TV-19)1.
Corporate Author:
LOCKHEED AIRCRAFT CORP VAN NUYS CALIF
Report Date:
1956-03-27
Abstract:
The principal flight objectives were the evaluation of autopilot performance and of a new, larger, retractable fin drag brake. Launch and boost were normal. At separation, the explosive charge used to assist booster-vehicle separation blasted forward into the fuselage. Electrical short circuits resulted and fire followed. Telemetering and beacon operation were normal prior to separation but ceased shortly thereafter, except for intermittent signals from one telemeter transmitter. The drag and main parachutes were damaged by the fire, and successful recovery was prevented. The chutes were not found, and it is not known at what point in the recovery sequence the chutes failed. The vehicle struck the ground at an oblique angle and broke into pieces. A summary of all X-7A reports to date is given on the following pages. Author
