Abstract:
The study was conducted to determine the capabilities of the X-7A autopilot in providing aerodynamic stability. In addition to the study using the three degree per second elevator speed of the Lear, Inc. autopilot, an elevator speed of ten degrees per second was simulated. An analog computer was used to simulate airframe dynamics and was connected to the actual Lear autopilot. Tests were conducted using an integrating motor to accomplish pitch displacement attenuation, but the results attained did not prove satisfactory. Consequently, the method finally adopted used a resistive-capacitive phase-lag network in conjunction with the simulated, ten-degrees-per-second, pitch servo. This system performed effectively in the longitudinal mode. The roll autopilot as now defined by autopilot No. 15 proved very effective, but minor improvements are recommended in the results action.
