Abstract:
The objective of this research was to fire a rejected separation cartridge with its regular charge of propellant powder in order to determine the effect of certain material flaws on the performance of the cartridge. The cartridge was magnaflux inspected and the areas containing flaws were photographed. The cartridge was loaded with a powder charge according to the established procedure shown by Drawing A1-L-267, Loading Separation Cartridge Booster and Vehicle. After loading, the cartridge was inserted in a container along with a sleeve which encased a flanged end of the cartridge and effectively throttled the flow of powder gases so that the peak pressure achieved would be in accord with normal usage. There were no immediate structural effects on the rejected cartridge when the propellant charge was fired. A study of the cartridge after it was cleaned and magnaflux inspected disclosed no noticeable changes in the size and distribution of the cracks. There were no dimensional changes in the cartridge cylinder in the region of the cracks. Therefore, the particular flaws in the cartridge tested had no deleterious effects when the cartridge was fired under circumstances simulating certain flight conditions. Author
