Abstract:
Previous hypersonic wind tunnel tests have demonstrated that ablation can drastically alter the dynamic stability of a re-entry vehicle or decoy. A qualitative explanation, of this effect is presented which explains these past results, wherein decreased stability was obtained with ablation aft of the center of rotation and vice versa. Preliminary results from a wind tunnel test program utilizing phased blowing from a model to simulate ablation are presented. The steps being taken to improve the degree of simulation in future tests are described. Author
