Abstract:
The purpose of this project is to determine the factors which affect the setting expansion of dental gypsum materials. This progress report covers the work done in investigating the influence of wax thermal expansion and flow on the effective setting expansion of casting investments. Factors varied were nature of the wax, temperature of the setting environment and measurement direction on an MOD wax pattern. The results indicate that softer waxes and higher temperature setting environments result in greater effective setting expansion in the pupal plane of the wax pattern but little change in the gingival plane. The most uniform effective setting expansion results from the usage of a soft wax and a room temperature setting environment and a hard wax and a 100 F. setting environment. Author
