Report Date:

Abstract:
The performance of a camera tube, especially its sensitivity, c n be improve by employing a means of multiplying the elec ronic charge emit ed by t e photocathode in response to radiation prior to storage and subsequent scanning for readout. One possible approach of achieving such a pre-beam gain is t use of electron bombardment induced conductivity EBIC in a thin layer of an i sulator or semiconductor. The basic problems encountered with this type of target re briefly reviewed a d ummarized. Another method of achieving prebeam gain is by s condary lectron emi sion an co duction SEC in a porous l yer of a suitable insula or. Because of promising results obtained with this type of targe in a parallel program, effor w s concentrated on the low density KC1-target. A description of the mode of operation and the expecte and achieved performance of these t rge s is given. In order to evaluate target performance in a sealed off tube containing caesiu antimony photocathode such a tube was built and evaluated. Author
