Abstract:
The effect of adrenalectomy on respiration and phosphorylation in liver mitochondria and homogenates was studied. The efficiency of oxidative phosphorylation was unaltered in mitochondria and homogenates from adrenalectomized rats. Nevertheless, the maximal phosph rylative capacity per cell appeared to decrease followingADRENALECTOMY. This decre se se ed to result from a general reduction in the protein per cell in a renalectomized rats, rather than from a specific effect on respiratory enzymes. The lowered cellular protein seemed to be caus d by a lowered caloric intake in adrenalectomized rats. The results of this inv stigation suggest that physiological levels of corticosteroids do not directly affect respiration or phosphorylation in the liver. Author
