Abstract:

The production and use of a magnetic tape library of thermodynamic data is discussed. The tape is produced from a deck of punched cards, six for each of more than one hundred chemical species. The data on each species include an identification number, coded references, formula, and atomic weight of elemental species, the enthalpy change from 0 to 298.15 K, the standard heat of formation at 298.15 K, melting point and heat of fusion, boiling point and heat of vaporization, coefficients giving the specific heat as a rational function of the temperature, and integ ation constants permitting calculation of enthalpy and entropy. All data are given for a pressure of one atmosphere. These data permit calculation of enthalpy, entropy and the Gibbs free energy over the temperature range 1000 6000 K. The machine program used in the work is presented accompanied by illustrations of its use. Sources of the original data are given. Examples are produced from the literature showing discrepancies for some aluminum and boron compounds.
