Title:
HYDRODYNAMICS AND STABILITY AND CONTROL OF A TANDEM PROPELLER SUBMARINE
Corporate Author:

Report Date:
1962-03-26
Abstract:
Hydrodynamic and stability and control characteristics are investigated for a novel submarine configuration employing tandem, large hub-to-diameter ratio propellers whose blades are pitched collectively and cyclicly. Stability coefficients for the hull and the propeller are derived. Expressions for the control forces and moments generated by the propellers are developed and the perturbation equations of motion are used to analyze the controlled dynamic of the submarine. An analysis of the motions in the vertical plane indicates that the submarine can be stabilized at high speeds by automatic control of collective and cyclic pitch and that reasonable maneuverability can be obtained.
