Abstract:

Results are presented of a theoretical investigation of a frequency modulation optical communication system. This system employs the Zeeman effect to split a spectral line into several components so that part of its initial radiancy will be passed by an absorption cell at the receiver. Of basic importance to this system is a knowledge of the amount of incident light passed by the absorption cell as a function of magnetic field at the emitter. A transmission function was obtained for the Hg 2537 Angstroms spectral line which splits into 3 Zeeman Components. Several transmission functions were plotted for several values of temperature in the emission cell, temperature in the absorption cell, and length of the absorption cell. A simple rectangular absorption curve and rectangular emission line are also discussed. Author
