Abstract:

Charged particles, when trapped in the earths magnetic field, can perturb that field. It is suggested that these distortions are the cause of the main phase of magnetic storms and of the large departures from the theoretical geomagnetic field which have been observed during the flights of several space probes. In this sense, the analysis is an outgrowth of an earlier treatment which advanced what was at that time a new model of magnetic storms and aurorae. A short historical introduction is given to the heritage from which the present theory evolved. Author
