Abstract:
The B-coefficient technique was the method proposed for identifying and combining individual college courses into composite groups. This method was contrasted with the method adopted in the University of Washington differential grade prediction system. The analysis of the data clearly supports the new technique as the superior method. The new technique as a simple, economical, and reasonably efficient method for grouping criterion variables showed sufficient promise to warrant its application in a much broader setting. The problem of reducing the number of criteria by omitting or grouping criterion variables is prior to that of selecting predictors and the failure to use systematic procedures for identifying meaningful criterion categories may obscure much of the differential prediction efficiency in the system. Predictive efficiency is unlikely to be achieved through subjective or arbitrary designations of criterion variables. Author
