Abstract:
The ionospheric irregularities causing scintillation of extraterrestrial radio sources were studied by the observation of radio signals transmitted from artificial earth satellites on spaced receivers. Observations show that the irregularities are distributed in patches which extend the order of 1000 km horizontally and are confined to the height range from 300 to 600 km above the ground vertically. It is shown that the irregularities responsible for the scintillation are highly elongated along the magnetic lines of force, and limits for the size of the irregularities in the pattern over the ground are given.
