Abstract:
Results of measurements of the collisional detachment of electrons from oxygen negative ions are presented. It is shown that the electron affinity of the negative O2 ion is 0.44 or 0.02 ev. A discussion of low pressure measurements is presented, where the product of the attachment coefficient and detachment frequency is determined from the ratio of the detached electron current to the current of electrons which cross the drift tube without attaching to the gas. A discussion of the high pressure technique is given in which the ratio of the detachment frequency to the attachment coefficient is obtained from measurements of the ion and electron drift velocity. A treatment of the attempt to assign an energy scale to drift tube data is presented. The present state of this field is briefly reviewed and recommendations for future work are made. Author
