Abstract:
The use of a ruby laser to optically pump a ruby crystal and obtain population inversion between a pair of ground-state energy levels hose separation is in the microwave region was examined. An experiment to observe this inversion was initiated. Flux and flame-fusion techniques for growing single crystals of chromium-doped yttria of high quality for millimeter maser applications are being studied. Two processes are discussed and estimates given for the production of millimeter-wavelength and infrared radiation by the nonlinear interaction of radiation with matter. With currently available emerald although of imperfect crystalline structure, maser operation at kmc was achieved with the crystal in the 90-degree field orientation. Author
