Abstract:

This experiment was concerned with the effects of feedback and group task difficulty on the performance of individuals working in seven men teams and on group performance. The results indicate that the performance of individuals improve when they work on a group task, and that the most pronounced improvement occurs for a difficult group task when information about the performance of all team members as well as of the team as a whole is made available. When information about team performance alone confounded feedback is given only slight improvement occurs. Group task difficulty led to increments in individual and group performance, although these increments were relatively weaker than those due to feedback. It was incidentally found that individuals performing at high rates were more sensitive to feedback than to group task difficulty, while the opposite was found for group members performing at low rates.
