Abstract:

Certain aspects are treated of the three-dimensional theory of electrostriction within the context of elastostatics. Field equations are derived by means of a calculation based on the invariant for of the stress-strain relations, and the restrictions imposed on the magnitude of the electric field by a linear theory and also the conditions under which equations for this field become uncoupled are discussed. The problem is considered of a dielectric embedded in another dielectric in the case when the shear moduli have the same value. In general, the dilatation is not uniform, therefore, neither are the stresses nor strains, although when one of the dielectrics is replaced by a conductor this may no longer be true. The discontinuities in the stress and strain components across the interface separating dielectrics are next examined and expressions for them derived in terms of the electric field. A solution is then presented to the field equations in terms of stress functions analogous to those of Papovich-Neuber, and a separate proof is given for an incompressible medium. Author
