Abstract:
Two years of research by the Machine Language Translation Study at The University of Texas are summarized. The mathematical basis of a generalized computer system for language translation is explained as a series of three models. The general models can be interpreted both linguistically to obtain grammars of specific languages, and operationally to obtain translation algorithms in a wide range of complexity and competence.
