Abstract:
A large number of Doppler frequency shift measurements for radio location were made with 20 MHz radio signals from satellites at Breisach, Germany. Special HF receivers of very high sensitivity and high stability in frequency were developed for these measurements. The purpose of the measurements was to study the ionospheric influence on the propagation of the 20 MHz signals, which causes errors at the radio location of satellites. The result is that this influence becomes especially important when the maximum usable frequency of the ionospheric F sub 2layer is higher than 20 MHz. The ion clouds within the E-region called sporadic E may also be considered as source of errors at radio location. Author
