Abstract:

Paramagnetic resonance absorption of Mn at 9300 mc has been studied using single crystals of CaCo3 containing 0.06 per cent by weight Mn ions. The Mn spectra consists of 30 well resolved lines, approximately 3.5 gauss wide and extending over a range of 1100 gausss with a large dependence upon angular orientation between crystal axes and external magnetic field. The theory pertaining to the Mn resonance absorption in the CaCO3 crystal is developed and presented. The interpretation of the observed spectra is based upon crystalline field effects plus nuclear hyperfine interaction. The spectroscopic g factor is found to be essentially isotropic. The hyperfine strucutre factors A and B are found to be nearly equal. The fine structure constants D and d are determined. The values assigned are g 2.0022 A 8.782 x 10 - to the third power cm - to the first power D 3.75 x 10 - to the third power cm - to the first power g 2.0014 B 8.774 x 10 - to the third power cm - to the first power d 4.00 x 10 - to the sixth power cm - to the first power. Small discrepancies between theory and experiment are found as well as unexpected and unexplained line splittings at certain angular orientations. Contractors abstract
