Title:
LUMINANCE THRESHOLDS DURING DARK ADAPTATION FOLLOWING PREADAPTATION TO CATHODE RAY TUBE DISPLAYS
Corporate Author:
COLUMBIA UNIV NEW YORK
Report Date:
1952-12-01
Abstract:
The luminance thresholds were measured following preadaptation to CRT displays, which consisted of a vertical trace line moving horizontally across the screen at 1, 30, or 60 timessec. The thresholds were determined during different stages of dark adaptation by the identification of the position of a luminous dial pointer. The initial thresholds were relatively low -2.0 lg mL, and dark adaptation was complete in about 5 min. Viewing CRT displays resulted in a temporary detrimental effect upon the visual efficiency of aircraft personnel and there by impaired their ability to read instrument dials and perceive objects external to the aircraft.
