Abstract:
We examine the effect of stirring and mixing on the marine planktonic ecosystem. We present a number of models investigating the impact of patchiness in the population, diffusion, and fluid stirring on the spatial structure of the population and the overall production rates of the system. It is found that the heterogeneity of the system significantly affects the way the system behaves. The response of the ecosystem to the action of the fluid flow is a function of not only the topology of the flow but also the dynamics of the ecological model itself.
