Abstract:

Transient photodarkening PD, which is only observed during illumination, has been discovered in some amorphous chalcogenides. During illumination, total changes in absorption coefficient are a combination of transient and metastable part of PD. The transient PD decays as the illumination is switched off to give the usually observed metastable PD. The decay of the transient part, is similar to the decay of photocurrent in a-As2Se3 suggesting the importance of photocarriers in inducing PD. Although no metastable PD is observed for a-Se at 300 K, there exists transient PD.
