Abstract:
As part of a joint-venture effort between Norden Systems, Inc. and AUSRIRE, a Soviet Electronic Ministry specializing in aircraft landing systems, several Norden engineers visited Leningrad, USSR, for a week in October 1990 to interface with Russian engineering experts to discuss the Soviet Microwave Landing System technology. As a result, considerable knowledge as to the Russian state-of-the-art in phased arrays and microwave circuitry was gained together with Russian work habits, attitudes, and methods of operation. This paper reports on this experience. Specifically, Russian engineering capability and performance achieved in the fields of slotted arrays, phased array technology, microstrip phase shifters, solid-state transmitters, radomes, transmission lines, and antenna test ranges are presented. In addition, their technical approach is discussed. Finally, a few words about the Russian language and the city of Leningrad are added.
