Abstract:

Photonic switching options for various applications including ATM switching, high speed LANs, optical cross-connects, etc, arc currently investigated within the european project RACE OSCAR Optical Switching Systems, Components and Application Research. InP based Photonic Integrated Circuits have been identified as key devices. The paper reviews the latest state of the art semiconductor switches designed and fabricate within the project illustrating both the main technological trends as well as the envisaged system applications.
