Abstract:
We have studied the interaction of 290-fsec, 308-nm laser pulses with Aluminum targets at irradiances exceeding 5 x 10 to the 18th Wsq. cm. 5 EWsq. cm. The x-ray spectrum shows a hot electron component with a characteristic temperature of 30 keV, and a low temperature component of 1 keV. Imaging of the x-rays shows an emission region of few micrometers for the hot component and a larger region for the 1 keV emission. The x-ray brightest lines radiating 0.6 of the incident laser light energy. The spectral luminosity of the L sub alpha line was measured to be 3 x 10 to the 14th Wsq. cm.eVsr.
