Abstract:

Meteor Burst Communications MBC provides reliable, beyond-line-of-sight data communications, but some serious throughput limitations are associated with the technology. One limitation is the finite waiting time required to send a message. This waiting time can be reduced by increasing the excess link margin, but this increases the cost and complexity of an MBC system. However, because of the limited footprint of a meteor trail, the waiting time for a system of networked stations can be reduced by spreading the stations over multiple footprints. For example, an array with station spacings of 50 km demonstrated less than one-tenth the waiting time of a single link. SRI International of Menlo Park, California, designed and operated an MBC array in the north central United States to study meteor burst spatial diversity. This paper describes the effects of spatial diversity on link throughput and describes preliminary observations of signal footprint size and shape.
