Abstract:

While the recent developments of Intermediate Modulus carbon fibers led to very high specific tensile strength over the first generation of High Strength fibers, the composites compressive properties did not improve at all. Because most of the aeronautical structures are subject to alternate tension and compression, it is not possible to take full advantage of carbon fibers composites, as the compressive loading becomes the design limitation. After a focus on the matrix dominating role in composite compression behavior, this paper will clear out which matrix characteristic, stiffness or strength, pilotes the unidirectional compressive failure.
