Abstract:

Based on a review of human engineering activities in ten major acquisition projects, this paper outlines some conclusions aimed at facilitating the integration of human engineering activities with the development of advanced avionics. Conclusions are also drawn about the systems design and human engineering processes, and the role that mission, function, and task analyses can play in integrating human engineering and systems development activities. It is concluded that an approach which combines the interaction of hardware, software, and human functions is made especially necessary by the impact of advanced technology on the roles of human operators and maintainers, on the man-machine interface, and on the system development process itself. Finally it is argued that there is a need to establish standardized approaches to the application of human engineering in avionics system design. NATO Furnished. RH
