The strains and displacements in engine components, and in particular in interlocking joints, have been measured by means of two interferometric methods 1 high sensitivity Moire interferometry, using gratings with 1200 linesmm, and 2 a coarser grating of 40 linesmm. This paper describes the two methods and, compares the results to the predictions of a finite element program for a typical dovetail joint. Application of the technique to the assessment of fretting damage and to the lifting of dovetail joints is discussed.
