The Filling in of Harbour Basins Which Contain Contaminated Silt,
ROTTERDAM PUBLIC WORKS DEPT (NETHERLANDS)
Pagination or Media Count:
Due to civil engineering works much more consideration must be given to their influence upon the biotic and the abiotic environment that was given previously. The reasons for this are the large scale of the projects, the increasing shortage of space, and the increasing use of substances which may pollute the environment. These problems arise not only during the dredging and disposal of silt, but the ground is also being contaminated to an increasing degree on inland sites. Every project requires individual assessment. With the aid of an example taken from the boundary between land and water, the influence which the type of work and possible concentrations of contaminants may have upon the environment are set out in this paper. The means for the possible dispersion of execution is described, including the relationship between environmental, financial, and technical consequences. This enables a choice to be made between the traditional methods and the new alternative.
