Abstract:

Hand soldering thermodynamics have remained virtually unchanged in the past decade. Improvements have been made in idle temperature stability, but the selection of a soldering iron is largely based on the temperature of the tip prior to soldering, the heat capacity of the tip, and the recovery rate of the tip to idle temperature. This paper addresses an improved approach to the design and evaluation of soldering irons. The results of this analysis lead to new design rules for soldering irons. The heat capacity of the tip is minimized so that the heater responds to the connection temperature. Power is delivered to the connection from the heater based on the heaterconnection temperature differential. Therefore, delivered power is controlled and a consistent connection temperature is provided.
