Aircraft bearings normally operate at high speeds and have to meet demanding reliability requirements. If conventional guidelines for their design are used, the resultant stresses are low. The stresses are particularly low if compared to those customarily applied in testing rolling fatigue. Testing at such low stress levels was in the past almost entirely relegated to extended performance testing. It was only due to the inexplicably large differences between the calculated fatigue lifeunfactored life and the life actually achieved under normal aircraft-type loading and lubricating conditions that finally led to systematic fatigue life testing.
