Abstract:

Techniques for characterization of fine particle distributions with weight mean particle diameters ranging from 1.5 to 50 microns have been developed for the Electrozone Particle Size Analyzer. The parameters investigated included orifice size, sample preclassification, electrolyte, solubility, and temperature effects. Sample preparation and introducing techniques, optimization of instrument control settings and blending of data from multiple orifice analyses into a single distribution report were also established. Favorable correlation with results from standard Mine Safety Appliance MSA methods were obtained. Materials studied include cupric oxide, ammonium perchlorate, and HMX. Samples were analyzed in the as-received state and after grinding by hammer, vibro energy and fluid energy mills. Author
