This presentation outlines the authors vision of the future for research in the area of bioeffects of radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. Research into the mechanisms by which electromagnetic fields interact with biological tissue will assume increasing importance in the next few years. Those concerned with assessment of hazards of nonionizing radiation require more information concerning mechanisms before they can proceed with their activity. However, the major new impetus for mechanism research will be derived from beneficial applications of electromagnetic fields to biological tissue. Use of electric and magnetic fields to promote healing is already widespread and will continue to increase. Every indication strongly suggests that the use of electromagnetic fields in the practice of medicine has only just begun. Advances in our understanding of how electromagnetic fields interact with living tissue will be followed rapidly by new techniques and devices for probing and controlling cell function.
