Abstract:

As part of the Naval Explosives Safety Improvement Program NESIP, a series of tests have been conducted to verify predictions concerning the sympathetic detonability of 16 in.50 HC projectiles. Analytical studies could not rule out the possibility of sympathetic detonation. Based on the test results, a reaction probability of eleven percent can be estimated. With this estimate of the reaction probability, it is assessed that the 16 in.50 HC projectile loaded with Explosive D will not mass detonate.
