Abstract:

This paper presents preliminary experimental results from a study of damping in aligned discontinuous fiber reinforced polymer composites. The experiments were conducted in order to verify a previously developed theoretical model, which predicted that discontinuous fiber reinforcement should enhance the shear-induced linear viscoelastic damping effect in the polymer matrix material. Data for graphiteepoxy and aramidepoxy composites show that, is predicted, very low fiber aspect ratios are required to produce significant improvements in damping, and that damping also increases markedly with increasing vibration frequency at these low aspect ratios.
