In helicopter transmissions, the reduction gear box and its components, contain epicyclic and bevel reduction gears which are subjected to elasto-hydro-dynamic lubrication. Adequate fluid-film lubrication, where elastic deformation of bearing surfaces becomes significant, is vital. If not corrected, it will lead to failure of the main gear box and damage to gear teeth and bearings. This paper discusses the theory and physical interpretation of elastic deformation of the contact surfaces, as a design means to alleviate adverse stress conditions during operations. The author attempts to compute the pressure distribution in the contact, allowing for the effects that this pressure has on the properties of the fluid and on the geometry of the elastic solids. The solution also provides the shape of the lubricant film, particularly the minimum clearance between the solids.
