Grain Geometry Effects on LOVA Propellant Burning Rate Characteristics,

It was observed that the burning rate properties of the CABNCRDX LOVA propellant appeared to vary depending on the granulation of the actual sample being tested. In order to understand this behavior, a series of samples with varying web sizes and perforation diameters was made of the CABNCRDX propellant in both the bimodal and the unimodal versions. These were used for closed bomb burning rate tests. The results showed a strong dependence on the perforation surface area per unit mass, with the burning rates becoming higher in the pressure regime from 20 to 125 MPa 3 to 18 kpsi as this area becomes larger. It has been possible, using a flamespread factor and a burning rate enhancement factor, to model the burning rate behavior of the samples with the small perforations, making their burning rates coincide reasonably well with the burning rates for the samples with very large perforations.
