Stress management is an area which has been recognized as important to military organizations for many years. Stress Curves have been developed for basic training recruits, a special forces team anticipating attack in Viet Nam slide 1, engineers being developed to remote sites to clean up radiological debris and on cadets during Cadet Basic Training at West Point. At this point I will focus primarily upon the issue of stress management, especially as these programs have been conducted at West Point. The purpose of this disgression is to indicate the path which stress management has taken at the Military Academy and to use that as a sounding board. The sounding board leads to two concepts on thoughts 1 there is no single approach or foundation of knowledge consistently used by Army psychologists to assist commanders to manage stress in their organization, 2 wellness is the coming area and experience for the development of stress management programs, both positive and negative, can be used to develop wellness programs.
