Abstract:

The 1980s will see increased standardization in military avionics. MIL-STD-1553 has proven to be an effective means of assuring communications among independently developed avionic subsystems. Future applications of the Air Force standard computer architecture. MIL-STD-1750A, and standard programming language, MIL-STD-1589B, will further decrease the life cycle costs of many systems currently under development. While MIL-STD-1750A defines a specific CPU architecture, and MIL-STD-1553B defines the method of communication among subsystems, no current Air Force standard defines the IO channel that links the 1750 processor to the 1553 bus. In order to reduce both the cost of software development and maintenance, General Dynamics has developed a 1553 channel architecture to be applied to all the subsystems being programmed in-house for the F-16 Multi-National Staged Improvement Program MSIP.
