Repeated in-depth interviews were conducted with all levels of the chain of command in two tank battalions in Europe during a training effectiveness analysis of a tank system. The purpose of the interviews was to describe the state of training in the battalions across a six month time frame. Interviews were conducted with the battalion commanders, all the company commanders, over 80 of the platoon level leaders platoon leaders, platoon sergeants, and tank commanders, over 70 of the crewmen, and over half the mechanics, and maintenance supervisors. The resulting descriptions of the amount of training conductedreceived and the nature of that training differed remarkably at three levels of the chain of command when training was rigorously defined and when training was undefined. Implications for data collection and interpretation of field data are drawn.
