The broad objective of our group is to develop an understanding of the dynamic interaction which occurs between the human operator and the sensors, controls, and displays of remotely manned systems teleoperators. The emphasis is placed on establishing a fundamental understanding of mans perception of information received from sensors and displays and his performance using control systems and their associated manipulator devices, in order to produce increasingly intelligent, skilled performance across a variety of specified tasks. In order to accomplish this objective, we have begun to develop a general model of remote operator performance that will ultimately have broad predictive ability. A fundamental prerequisite for the development of this model is a data base of performance derived both from empirical tests as well as from predictions based on existing models of perception and motor-skill performance.
