Abstract:

There are four areas of planned and proposed DoD space activity in which habitability issues play an important role. These are 1 long-duration space missions, 2 short-duration space missions, 3 extended-duration STS missions, and 4 terrestrial space operations centers. The purpose of this paper is to identify some of the missions within each of these areas and to explore the associated behavioral, psychological, and sociological issues. These include sleep, clothing, exercise, medical support, personal hygiene, food preparation, group interaction, habitat aesthetics, outside communications, recreational opportunities, privacy and personal space, and waste disposal and management.
