The U.S. Armys alternate fuels program is the responsibility of the Mobility Equipment Research and Development Command MERADCOM. The research program on the effects of alternative fuels on gas turbine engine combustion is reviewed. Experimental programs have primarily concentrated on two areas of changing fuel properties the effects of volatility on combustor performance characteristics such as ignition and combustion efficiency and the effects of changing fuel chemistry on soot formation and flame radiation.
